Samba de Rainha
My name is Liani and I was born and raised in Santos, a seaside town in Brazil.
My dancing journey has started in my teen years at the school of Capoeira of Mestre Fabio Parada and in my interest and identification with the Afro Brazilian religion.
Samba has always been present in my life from Pagode nights every weekend in my hometown to Carnaval parades in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.
When I left Brazil to chase greener pastures, I spent almost a year training to be a Latin Ballroom dance teacher at Arthur Murray dance studio in Houston, Texas (USA). There, I also taught salsa and cha-cha beginners classes.
In London, I joined Pineapple studios. There, I spent 3 intensive years training in Latin jazz and Samba. I also had a chance to teach a beginner Samba course and a few drop in Samba classes.
In 2016, I joined Paraiso School of Samba (PSS) first as a Passista then, in 2017, I was elected the Queen of the Drums (Rainha de Bateria), and was also added to the teaching panel of the school. For 3 years, I took part in the Notting Hill Carnival as a Highlight (Destaque) and Ala President, guiding a group of 12 girls through the parade with PSS.
I’m also a freelance dancer, I performed with different Brazilian bands and groups in the U.K., and I'm part of Brazilian Fantasy. I've also taken my Brazilian Samba to TV shows and music videos, the most exciting one with Basement Jaxx.
I've trained with great Brazilian Samba artists and I'm accredited by Carlinhos Salgueiro. Every year, I spend at least 4 weeks in Brazil, during Carnaval period, to refresh my energy, improve my Samba skills and to parade as a Passista in GRES Império da Tijuca and Unidos de Vila Isabel School of Samba.
Samba for me is a true passion, it's a way to be connected to my roots and culture. It's a way to keep fit and healthy (mentally and physically).
I want to share the culture and empowerment of samba with you!
Vem sambar comigo!
Come samba with me!
We are really excited to have Liani leading this special workshop for Beleza and it will certainly help a samba dancer preparing to become a future Rainha de Bateria!
Lots of love
